About Us
THE HAMPSHIRE HEALTH SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP
HISTORY AND ROLE OF THE GROUP
The Group was established in 1963 under the name of "The
East Hants Health and Safety Group" and brought about
at the instigation of Mr Robert Moffett, the then H.M. District
Inspector of Factories; located at Kings Road, Southsea in
conjunction with local and regional organisations and businesses.
The name of the group was changed in 1997 to The Hampshire
Health Safety and Environmental Group in order to better reflect
the geographical placing of the member companies and the inclusion
of the environment into our title expressing the increasing
importance of its protection in the workplaces.
In our endeavours for future success we remember our beginnings
and recognise the splendid work and achievements of past committees
for it from their management and development. We are now one
of the largest and most successful health and safety groups
in the country. Today in its operation, the group continues
to successfully provide a networking facility with up to date
information, knowledge and expertise along with practical
advice and assistance across the full health and safety spectrum,
which includes environmental and welfare issues.
THE GROUP TODAY
An executive committee elected
from volunteer representatives of our member organisations
currently manages the group.
The group's objectives are:
1. To maintain a high focus on health and safety and environmental
matters within member organisations.
2. To promote a positive health and safety and environmental
culture within member organisations.
3. To foster co-operation and co-ordination between all levels
of workforce within member organisations.
4. To promote continuing professional development in health
and safety and environmental matters within member organisations
and to share learning experiences.
In order to achieve these objectives the group holds monthly
meetings, 10 per year, which take place at different members
premises at 14:00 hrs on the 4th Wednesday of each month.
Our meetings are addressed by high quality speakers on a variety
of topical health, safety and environmental issues and include
the opportunity for member organisations to network with like-minded
professionals.
BIENNIAL CONFERENCE
Biennially, in October, the Hampshire Health Safety and Environmental
Group holds its prestigious one day conference which attracts
speakers eminent in the field of health, safety and the environment
also in occupational health and medicine. An important feature
of our conferences is the safety awards for innovative contributions
to improving health, safety and environment protection within
member organisations, schools and further education colleges.
In 2002, youth organisation's contributions were also included.
The late Phillip Coutts, our past chairman, conceived the
awards scheme and it is in his honour they and The Solent
Safety Award were instituted by the group in 1984. The late
Jack Bennett, a founder member and active conference organiser
is also recognised for his work within The Jack Bennett Trophy
